A lot is written about "mental strength" in gambling. What can be checked are not tricks but four effects described in research, each of which anyone can observe in themselves.
The near miss
Two matching symbols with the third just short are processed much like a small win, although the stake is lost. Machines display such combinations more often than a random arrangement would produce. You can spot it: after a near miss you are more likely to spin again than after a clear loss.
Illusion of control
Pressing the button yourself, stopping the reels or picking the number makes people overestimate their influence on a random outcome. The effect has been described since the 1970s, and it is why "stop buttons" and "choices" are built into games where they decide nothing mathematically.
Chasing losses
After a losing run, the tendency to raise the stake in order to win the loss back increases. It is the most expensive of the four reactions, because it creates volume exactly when the budget is already damaged. The remedy is not willpower but a limit set beforehand — see mindset at the machine.
Availability
Remembered wins are more vivid than remembered losses, and groups and streams amplify the distortion: you see wins more often because wins get posted. What that does to your own expectations is in casino communities; what tier systems build out of it is in VIP tiers.
Three measures that work against them
A deposit limit before you play, a fixed session length with a timer outside the game, and a log with date, stake and result. None of them changes a game’s rate — they change how much is played. How table rules settle the rest is in live tables.
Frequently asked questions
What is a near miss?
A lost stake that looks like a small win. It raises the chance of playing on, although nothing was won.
Does mental technique help against the house edge?
No. It helps against your own behaviour. The house edge stays the same regardless of mindset or experience.
Which single measure works best?
A deposit limit set before you play — it works even when an intention does not hold.
