Loyalty schemes are arithmetic in advertising language. Points, cashback and tiers can be checked in three steps, and the result is almost always smaller than the headline.
What a point is worth
A scheme states two numbers: how many points a stake earns and what a point is worth. One point per 10 EUR staked and 100 points per 1 EUR mean a 0.1% return. If one of the two numbers is missing from the terms, the scheme cannot be evaluated — and that is a finding, not an oversight.
Cashback: a percentage of what?
Ten per cent cashback sounds identical everywhere but means different things: ten per cent of a week’s net loss, of the stake, or only of losses in certain games. Then there is the form: bonus funds with their own wagering condition are not money. Check both — the basis and the form — before comparing the figure with anyone else’s.
Tiers and their thresholds
Tiers are reached through turnover. A threshold of 5,000 points at one point per 10 EUR is 50,000 EUR of turnover; the return from it is known, and so is the house edge on that turnover. The full calculation is in VIP tiers.
Why schemes work anyway
Because they touch something other than yield: progress, status and closeness.
